The importance of Inspiration

Writing is a combination of Intuition and Practice –

It’s being open to the mysterious creative process where ideas, characters, and themes can appear to the writer seemingly out of thin air. Simultaneously, it’s also a fine-tuning of words and sharpening of story – improving our skills to do the “work” of writing.

So what happens when the magic gets lost in “the grind” of writing? How, as writers, do we find our way back to the place where words flow, and ideas emerge on the page with joy and ease?

That’s what MRO’s Creative Space is about: intentionally seeking inspiration as we face the empty page – a simple, yet powerful approach. When we savor and integrate new sparks of wisdom, we tap into the magnetism of creativity, experiencing the delight of surrender to a flow that carries our stories into the world.

Writers Book Club

Get insights & Inspiration From writers, With Writers

If you’re bringing new work into the world, you might also happen to have a stack of books containing great wisdom from accomplished creative thought leaders. Chances are, the books were recommended to you by fellow writers or other experts who guide your writing life. They sit, waiting patiently to be read. Or, maybe you’re reading them, but neglecting your own work…

If only there was a way to gather insights from these works, connect with fellow writers, and come away re-inspired to write? The Writers Book Club is a place to do exactly that.

Event Details

Each meeting, the Writers Book Club focuses on a book by a creative thought leader.

  • Enjoy a presentation with key takeaways and salient points from the work
  • Share insights from the selected work and your personal writing experience in large and small groups
  • Catalyze the conversation with ideas from the presentation and perhaps exercises from the book

Whether you’ve read the entire book or have familiarized yourself with it, these Zoom gatherings serve as respectful, knowledgeable, and delightful arenas of inspiration for the craft of writing.

Lyrical Musings

Study the Storytelling in Songwriting

Great songs are composed by great storytellers. In Lyrical Musings, we take a deeper dive into how good lyrics fit a storytelling structure, exploring the way the song’s musical arrangement heightens the listener’s experience of the story. Together, we create an inspiration playlist to make getting back to the page and in the flow feel like fun!

Event Details

These occasional Zoom gatherings focus on a popular musician or composer, all artists regarded as great storytellers in music.

  • Listen and absorb selected lyrics and audio portions from the featured song
  • Dig into the story structure of the song with Maria using proven story analysis tools
  • Share your impressions of the words and music with the group, and discuss your thoughts and reflections on the song’s storytelling process

You are invited to listen to the song(s) ahead of the session, or wait to listen so you can share your impressions in real time!

There is nothing needed to prepare for the event – through prompts and reflective listening, we’ll rediscover the joy and fun of writing that may have gotten lost working on a project or in the daily grind.

Event Details

These occasional Zoom gatherings provide a space for writers of any experience level to set aside their current writing project and tap into a deep well of inspiration.

  • Listen to Maria present a poem or other inspirational writing
  • Pay attention to the words or phrases that speak to you in the moment
  • Free write your thoughts and your experience as the writer
  • Share your words with the other writers on the call, if you like
  • Hear from others what resonated with them

In taking time to listen, write, and share in what resonates, we cultivate our connection to creativity and the joy of inspired action.
