Setting Course to Soar: Historical Fiction Editing with Bradley Harper
Historical fiction editing requires an editor who understands both rigorous research and page-turning storytelling. When Bradley Harper brought his thriller manuscript Maiden Voyage to MRO Creative, he needed a collaborative editing partner who could heighten suspense while preserving historical authenticity.
As a certified Story Grid editor, I spoke Brad’s language of craft and character from our first conversation. Through the Manuscript Migration service, we performed a developmental edit that deepened the twists, clarified character motivations, and built toward a sequel-worthy ending. The result? A traditional publishing contract with Artemesia Publishing and advance praise calling it “a masterwork of sleight-of-hand…a heist wrapped in heartbreak and history.”
This success story demonstrates how the right editorial partnership – grounded in shared methodology and mutual respect – transforms a compelling draft into a publishable novel that grips readers from first page to last.
Author Bradley Harper –
“Working with Maria was a joy. Her enthusiasm made the process feel more like two writers collaborating than an editor redlining my problem areas. Bottom line: I sold the manuscript after I incorporated her suggestions. I recommend her to anyone who’s stuck on their work in progress.” – Bradley Harper

Bradley Harper is a retired US Army Colonel and board-certified pathologist with 37 years of active duty service. During his military career, he performed over 200 autopsies, held four commands, worked in the Pentagon, and became the only non-Italian ever to receive the Knights of Malta award for his support of the Italian Army. He speaks five languages and served as an infantry officer before attending medical school.
A lifelong Sherlock Holmes fan, Brad earned his Associates in Creative Writing from Full Sail University upon retirement to write the book he’d always wanted to read: A Knife in the Fog. His latest work, Maiden Voyage, combines his deep understanding of human nature with meticulous historical research. When he’s not writing, Brad happily plays Santa each Christmas with his wife as Mrs. Claus.
The Story: Maiden Voyage

From the Publisher:
Three female thieves, a priceless painting, and a Pinkerton agent aboard the Titanic. What could go wrong?
Colette DuVall, a young jewel thief from Canada, follows Mary Carr, the ‘Queen’ of the criminal gang The Forty Elephants, aboard the Titanic to steal a painting by the French master, Blondell. Her resolve weakens when she meets Harry Worth, a young Pinkerton agent hired to safeguard the wealthy passengers during the ship’s maiden voyage. Harry, the son of master criminal Adam Worth, questions his role as a private policeman exacting private justice, and his doubts deepen after losing his heart to the charming Colette. Can two people on opposite sides of the law find love and survive the sinking of the largest object ever made?
Loyalties collide as fiercely as the ship with the iceberg, and as the three struggle to escape the foundering colossus, they find love is the greatest thief of all.

Manuscript Migration
Bradley’s Maiden Voyage manuscript sailed my way with the opportunity to collaborate on a developmental edit of his historical novel. A sucker for a good story, this charming thriller set on the Titanic drew me right in.
Brad and I immediately hit it off. He had read the Story Grid and found it a useful way to analyze his work objectively. With my certification as a Story Grid editor, we spoke a shared language of craft and character insights.
“Maria saw my intent in the manuscript from the start. She was encouraging while giving me clear actions to take to get the novel where it needed to be. She preserved my voice while pointing out areas where the reader could become confused or bogged down.” – Bradley Harper
With the Story Grid diagnostics process as our guide, we dove deep into his manuscript and heightened the page-turner twists while building to a delightfully satisfying ending that begs for a sequel.
“Editing, when done right, is a collaboration of minds and spirit… That Maria is a writer helped her guide my story to a satisfying conclusion. Bottom line: When I next need an editor, I’ll reach out to her.” – Bradley Harper
The Epilogue
Brad is a master of historical fiction, and Titanic’s epic journey has long fascinated me. It was my pleasure to be embedded with Brad’s vividly drawn characters and to see the story told anew. You can follow Brad’s work here.

Editor’s Reflections
In my developmental editing, the most gratifying and joyous projects are when the author and I are writing the same story. That is, we’re both tuned in to the same creative muse to bring an important and impactful story to life. Brad and I connected this way. Looking forward to our next adventure!
