Love Song
The other night, the house was mine. I sat in the comfort of our family room, watching my show, eating a dinner prepared by someone else (thank you, LuLu), sipping a chilled beverage. The late afternoon turned to twilight, and a female cardinal chirped in our backyard. Her steady calls carried in over the TV.
My evening was about to get better. The cardinal’s song drew my eyes out the sliding glass doors to the peachy-pink clouds in the sky. A beautiful sunset was underway. I paused the show, covered my dinner, and backed the car out of the driveway. My destination: a schoolyard perched hillside near our subdivision with a nearly unobstructed view of the western sky. The radio was tuned to the U2 music channel, playing “Window in The Skies.”
The parking lot was mine. I swung into a spot just as Bono pleaded: “Oh, can’t you see what love has done?”

What love is doing to me: A twilight drenched in grace as my favorite bird announced a beautiful sunset, serenaded by my favorite band. My story “A New Day” tells of the first time I truly heard the birds in my backyard. Before this change of heart, I’d have settled deep in the cushions and turned up the volume. Now, I hold the power of the pause button…and I know better than to ignore their song.*
To every broken heart
For every heart that cries
Love left a window in the skies
And to love I rhapsodize

I hold the power of the pause button…
What do I need to pause? My jumbled thoughts? My restless avoidance of a difficult task?
Maybe what I pause for is more important. A pause to pet my eager dog, a moment to call a friend, a prayer for someone hurting, a breath for myself. A pause from whatever is before me to stand for a kiss and a hug, because we never know how much time we have left.
Thanks, Maria.
Pause for the pause, yes? Love this, Hazel. What we may dismiss as unimportant becomes the best use of our time and attention. Beautiful!
